Heart's desire is a play written by Caryl Churchill in 1997. It revolves around a family awaiting their daughter's return from Australia. During this period of anticipation, desires, fears, and raw impulses manifest, leading the father, mother, and aunt astray from societal expectations and predefined roles.
The play delves into the role of the family in our society and examines its inherent structural instability. It scrutinizes the language constructed within this familial framework, probing its boundaries and assessing the feasibility of genuine and effective communication devoid of information omission and manipulation—communication that eschews falsehood.
The stage production explores the mechanisms triggered when living within imagination and falsehoods appear as the most appealing and stable alternatives, providing a semblance of stability albeit fictitious.
